What is Autism?
Autism is a severe developement disorder. It is nerological and affects normal brian functions. Autism is under the umbrella of Pervasive Development Disorder. Autism is also grouped with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Other ASD includes Aspergers Syndrome, Rhett Syndrome, Child Disintgrative Disorder, and Pervasive Development Disorder- not otherwise specified . It is estimated that 1:150 children have ASD and the ratio is 4:1 boys to the girls.
Children and adults with autism have difficulties with behavior, social settings, verbal and nonverbal communications, obsessive interests, and repetitiveness. Each person with autism is affected differently.
Autism is not treatable and children do not out grow it. Autism can typically appear during the first three years of a child’s life. Even though autism is a life long disorder there is hope. Studies have shown that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes for these children.
Researchers everyday look for a way to help these children. They are also looking at why is autism on the rise. Some believe it can be genetic, the environment, and even child hood vaccines.
